Thirty minutes before sunset, the Cascais coast changes character: the glare softens, the wind often eases and the Atlantic turns from steel blue to copper. This guide covers five viewpoints for sunset cycling in Cascais, including approximate riding times from Cascais Train Station, where to face and what to expect on the ride home. Check the day’s sunset time before leaving and aim to arrive at least 20 minutes early.
Santa Marta is the easiest sunset stop in town
Santa Marta Lighthouse is roughly five to ten minutes by bike from the station, making it the best choice if you want an evening bike ride without committing to a long return in the dark. Follow the waterfront past the historic centre and marina, then find a safe place to leave the bike near the public seafront areas.
Look west across the water, shifting slightly southwest in winter and northwest during summer. The lighthouse, tiled buildings and small cove give the scene more structure than an uninterrupted ocean horizon. It is also sheltered compared with the exposed coast beyond Cascais, though parts of the view can be interrupted by the marina and headlands.
Boca do Inferno is the classic sunset cycling stop
Boca do Inferno sits about ten to fifteen minutes from the station at a relaxed pace. The ride is short, but the viewpoint feels dramatically different from central Cascais: dark cliffs, foaming water and the constant thump of waves entering the rocky inlet. Face west toward the open Atlantic rather than concentrating only on the chasm below.
Most of what's covered here is easiest to reach by bike. We're right at the train station whenever you're ready to grab one.
Rent a Bike →This is one of the best sunset spots in Cascais for atmosphere, but it can become busy around golden hour. Keep your bike away from pedestrian bottlenecks and do not scramble beyond barriers for a clearer photograph. The official viewing areas already provide the strongest perspective, especially when the sea is active.
Farol da Guia gives you an open Atlantic horizon
Continue along the coast for another five minutes and you reach the seafront around Farol da Guia, approximately 15 to 20 minutes from Cascais Train Station. The broad promenade and low rocky shoreline provide a cleaner horizon than Boca do Inferno. Face due west, adjusting toward the northwest during the long summer evenings.
This is my strongest all-round recommendation. It is far enough from town to feel spacious, yet close enough for a straightforward ride back after the sun drops. You can also arrive early and pedal slowly along the waterfront rather than waiting in one crowded viewpoint. Watch for walkers, runners and dogs sharing the promenade.
We keep a full range of sizes — plus a few e-bikes for windier days — at the station, if you'd rather ride than walk between these spots.
See Our Bikes →For the best Cascais sunset ride, do not chase the furthest viewpoint; choose the place that leaves you a comfortable, well-lit journey home.
Forte de São Jorge de Oitavos feels quieter
Allow around 25 to 35 minutes to reach the coast near Forte de São Jorge de Oitavos, depending on wind and how often you stop. The cycling route becomes more exposed here, running past low vegetation and rocky Atlantic shore. Look west or southwest from the seaward side of the route, while keeping clear of unstable rocks and cliff edges.
The appeal is space. Fewer people linger here than at Boca do Inferno, and the fort adds a strong silhouette as the light fades. A hybrid bike handles the paved coastal route comfortably; an e-bike is the better choice if a persistent northerly wind makes the outward ride feel harder than expected.
Guincho rewards the longest evening ride
Praia do Guincho is around 35 to 50 minutes from central Cascais in ordinary conditions, although a headwind can extend that considerably. Face west over the beach for the sunset, then glance north toward the Sintra hills as the final light catches their outline. The dunes and wide sweep of sand make this the most cinematic stop on the list.
If this has you itching to get moving, our bikes are ready to go right at Cascais Train Station — no need to book far ahead outside peak summer.
Browse Bike Rental →Guincho also requires the most preparation. After watching the full sunset, you will be cycling back in fading light for several kilometres. Bring or request proper bike lights, add a light layer against the wind and keep enough phone battery for navigation. Useful items include:
- A white front light and visible rear light
- A windproof layer, even after a warm afternoon
- Water and a secure phone pocket
- A lock if you plan to step onto the sand
For most riders, Farol da Guia offers the best balance of scenery and simplicity. Choose Guincho when the weather is settled and you are comfortable riding after dusk; choose Santa Marta or Boca do Inferno when you want the sunset without a long return. Whichever stop you pick, rent a bike that fits properly, test the lights before departure and leave enough time to enjoy the coast rather than racing the sun.
